6-Month IELTS Study Plan: Band 5 to 7+ Curriculum (2026)
Complete 6-month IELTS study plan for students targeting Band 7.0 from a Band 5.0 starting point. Month-by-month curriculum with weekly milestones, daily 2-hour schedule, and milestone checks. Designed for serious students who can dedicate 2 hours daily and need the full timeline.
Marcus Thompson
IELTS Curriculum Designer
Six months is the standard timeline for moving from Band 5.0 to Band 7.0. It is long enough to build skills systematically, short enough that motivation does not run out.
This curriculum assumes 2 hours of focused study per day, 5-6 days per week. If you have more or less time, the structure scales, but the milestone tests stay the same.
Who This Plan Is For
- Starting band: 5.0-5.5
- Target band: 6.5-7.0
- Time available: 2 hours/day, 5-6 days/week
- Timeline: 6 months (24 weeks)
- Self-discipline: high (this is not a 4-week sprint)
If your timeline is shorter, use the 4-week study plan or 30-day study plan. If your target is Band 7.5+, extend the plan by 2-3 months.
How the 6-Month Curriculum Is Structured
| Month | Focus | Weekly Hours | Milestone |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Diagnostic + Foundation | 10 hr | Identify weak skills, baseline score |
| 2 | Skill Building | 10 hr | Each skill score increases by 0.5 band |
| 3 | Integrated Practice | 12 hr | Combined task performance, no skill below 6.0 |
| 4 | Full Mock Tests | 12 hr | First full mock ≥ 6.5 overall |
| 5 | Weak Skill Focus | 10 hr | Weakest skill reaches 6.5+ |
| 6 | Exam Simulation | 10 hr | Mock score ≥ 7.0, ready for exam |
Each month has a milestone test. If you hit the milestone, move forward. If you miss it, repeat the month before moving on.
Before Month 1: The 2-Day Setup
Before you start the 6-month plan, spend two days on setup. This is what most students skip, and it is why most students plateau.
Day 0 (Setup Day 1):
- Take a full diagnostic test under timed conditions
- Score each section: Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking
- Note your starting band for each skill
- Identify your weakest skill
- Calculate your target band for each skill (not just overall)
Day 0 (Setup Day 2):
- Sign up for a feedback system. AI feedback (Band9Prep, IELTS Liz, or similar) for daily Writing and Speaking evaluation
- Buy Cambridge IELTS books 17, 18, 19 — these are the standard for practice tests
- Create a tracking spreadsheet: 26 rows (one per week), 6 columns (L, R, W, S, Overall, Notes)
- Set a target exam date 6 months from today (or 7 months to allow a buffer)
Month 1: Diagnostic and Foundation (Weeks 1-4)
The goal of Month 1 is to identify your specific weaknesses and build the foundational skills needed for the next 5 months.
Week 1: Format Familiarity

Listening target: Band 7.0+ (30+ correct answers consistently)
- Practice Section 3-4 (hardest sections) 3x per week
- Listen to one BBC 6 Minute English episode daily
- Spell-check every wrong answer
Reading target: Band 7.0+ (30+ correct answers)
- Drill your weakest question type 20 questions/day

- Read one academic article daily from The Guardian or New Scientist
Writing target: Band 6.5+
- Write 1 Task 1 and 1 Task 2 daily with feedback
- Track criterion scores (Task Response, Coherence, Vocabulary, Grammar)
- Rewrite every essay using feedback
Speaking target: Band 6.5+
- Record 5 Part 1 questions and 1 Part 2 cue card daily

Week 8 Milestone: First full mock test. Target: overall 6.0+ with no skill below 5.5.
Month 3: Integrated Practice (Weeks 9-12)
The goal of Month 3 is to combine skills. IELTS does not test skills in isolation. Reading and Writing overlap. Listening and Speaking overlap. This month practices the cross-skill demands.
Weekly Schedule
| Day | Morning (1.5 hr) | Evening (1 hr) |
|---|---|---|
| Mon | Full Listening test | Speaking practice |
| Tue | Full Reading test | Writing Task 2 |
| Wed | Writing Task 1 + rewrite | Speaking mock |
| Thu | Listening Section 3-4 | Reading true/false/ng |
| Fri | Full Writing (60 min) | Speaking cue cards |
| Sat | Full mock (L+R+W) | Error review |
| Sun | Rest | - |
Cross-Skill Integration
Week 9-10: Reading-to-Writing
- Read an academic article. Summarize it in 150 words. This builds both Reading comprehension and Writing Task 1 report style.
- Read an opinion piece. Write a 250-word response. This builds Reading + Task 2 essay skills.
Week 11-12: Listening-to-Speaking
- Listen to a 5-minute academic lecture. Then explain it as if you were the speaker answering Speaking Part 3 questions.
- Listen to a conversation. Note all the speaker opinions. Then have a 2-minute self-discussion.
Week 12 Milestone: Second full mock test. Target: overall 6.5+ with no skill below 6.0.
Month 4: Full Mock Tests (Weeks 13-16)
The goal of Month 4 is exam stamina. Full mock tests twice per week. By the end of this month, you should be comfortable with the full test in one sitting.
Weekly Schedule
| Day | Task |
|---|---|
| Mon | Full mock test (all 4 skills, in order, with breaks as in real exam) |
| Tue | Review mock test feedback. Identify error pattern. |
| Wed | Drill the error pattern from Tuesday's mock. |
| Thu | Second full mock test. |
| Fri | Review second mock. |
| Sat | Weak skill focus. |
| Sun | Rest. |
The Mock Test Routine
By Month 4, your full mock test should follow this routine:
- Time of day: Take the test at the same time as your real exam. If your exam is at 9am Saturday, take mocks at 9am Saturday.
- Environment: Quiet room. No phone. No notes. No breaks except the 10-minute transfer time after Listening.
- Materials: Cambridge book 18 or 19 practice tests. Real IELTS answer sheet (print one).
- Timing: Strict. Use a kitchen timer. Do not give yourself extra time.
- Post-test: Score Listening and Reading immediately. Submit Writing for AI feedback. Schedule Speaking mock with a friend or AI evaluator.
Week 16 Milestone: Mock test score 6.5-7.0 overall. All four skills at 6.5+.
Month 5: Weak Skill Focus (Weeks 17-20)
The goal of Month 5 is to push your weakest skill up another 0.5-1.0 band. This is where most students skip and end up with one skill that holds back their overall band.
Identify Your Weakest Skill
By now, your weakest skill is clear. It is the one that has plateaued or is consistently 1+ band below the others.
Weekly Schedule (If Writing is Weakest)
| Day | Morning (1.5 hr) | Evening (1 hr) |
|---|---|---|
| Mon | Task 1 + Task 2 with feedback. Rewrite using feedback. | Speaking practice. |
| Tue | Same as Monday, different topic. | Listening practice. |
| Wed | Same as Monday, different criterion focus. | Reading practice. |
| Thu | Same as Monday. | Full Listening test. |
| Fri | Same as Monday. | Full Reading test. |
| Sat | Review all 5 essays from this week. | Rest. |
| Sun | Rest. | - |
The 70% Rule
Spend 70% of your study time on your weakest skill. If Writing is weakest, write 5 essays per week. If Speaking is weakest, do 5 full Speaking mocks. If Listening is weakest, take 5 full Listening tests.
The other 30% maintains your strong skills. Do not abandon your best skill entirely. The goal is balanced band 7+, not just one skill at 8.
Week 20 Milestone: Weakest skill now within 0.5 band of your best skill. Overall mock test 7.0+.
Month 6: Exam Simulation (Weeks 21-26)
The goal of Month 6 is to lock in your performance. You are not trying to learn new material. You are rehearsing what you already know.
Week 21-22: Twice-Weekly Mocks
| Day | Task |
|---|---|
| Mon | Full mock test under exam conditions. |
| Wed | Weak skill drill. |
| Fri | Second full mock. |
| Sat | Review and error pattern check. |
| Sun | Rest. |
Week 23-24: Condition-Specific Mocks
| Day | Task |
|---|---|
| Mon | Full mock in morning (exam time). |
| Wed | Full mock with reduced time (10% less than official). |
| Fri | Full mock with no spell-check. |
| Sat | Light review. |
| Sun | Rest. |
Week 25: Final Polish
| Day | Task | |---|---|---| | Mon | Full mock. | | | Tue | Review. Vocabulary check. Grammar check. | | Wed | Full mock. | | Thu | Review. | | Fri | Light review only. Vocabulary list. Collocations. | | Sat | Rest. | | Sun | Rest. |
Week 26: Exam Week
| Day | Task |
|---|---|
| Mon | One Listening section. Light review. |
| Tue | One Reading passage. Light review. |
| Wed | One Task 1 + one Task 2. No new material. |
| Thu | Rest. No IELTS. |
| Fri | Travel to test center (if needed). Light review. |
| Sat | Exam day. |
How to Use This Plan If You Fall Behind
Most students fall behind by week 4-6. The fix is not to cram. The fix is to compress carefully.
If you are 1 week behind: skip the Sunday rest day for 2 weeks, catch up. No impact on the plan.
If you are 2 weeks behind: skip the Week 4 milestone test, take it at Week 5. Move other milestones back by 1 week.
If you are 1 month behind: the most common cause is weak feedback loops. You are writing essays but not getting feedback. Fix the feedback first, not the time. A 1-hour essay with feedback is worth 5 hours of writing without it.
If you are 2 months behind: extend the plan to 8 months. The plan structure is the same, but each month becomes 5 weeks instead of 4. Do not compress to 4 months. That defeats the curriculum.
What to Do If You Plateau
Plateaus are normal. They usually happen at these points:
- Band 5.5: Format and basic skills not yet automatic. Solution: more repetition, more full tests.
- Band 6.5: Technique limit. You know what to do but cannot execute under time pressure. Solution: more timed practice, more feedback on technique.
- Band 7.0: The hardest plateau. The gap from 7 to 7.5 is wider than 6 to 6.5. Solution: criterion-level work, not overall band work.
If you plateau for 4+ weeks at the same band, you have an unidentified error pattern. Take 5 full tests, score them, and look for the same mistakes in all 5. The pattern is your blocker.
The Cost of the 6-Month Plan
| Resource | Cost |
|---|---|
| Cambridge IELTS books 17, 18, 19 | ~$50 each, $150 total |
| Band9Prep (or similar AI feedback tool) | $0-15/month, ~$90 for 6 months |
| Practice tests | Included in Cambridge books |
| Total | ~$240 |
Compare this to a 6-month IELTS preparation class: $500-2000. The 6-month self-study plan is the highest-ROI option for motivated students.
What to Do If You Score Band 7+ Early
If you hit Band 7.0+ in Month 4, you have two options:
- Take the exam in Month 4. This is risky. Mock tests are not the real exam. You may underperform. Only do this if you have a deadline.
- Continue to Month 6. Use the extra time to push toward Band 7.5 or 8.0. A higher band gives you buffer in case of test-day variance.
For most students, option 2 is better. The cost of an additional 2 months of preparation is small compared to the cost of retaking the exam ($230+ per attempt).
