Frequently Asked Questions
How is the IELTS overall band score calculated?
Your overall IELTS band score is the average of your four section scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking). The average is rounded to the nearest whole or half band. For example, if your scores are L:7, R:6.5, W:6, S:7, the average is 6.625, which rounds to 6.5.
What is the difference between Academic and General Training IELTS scoring?
The scoring scale (1–9) is identical for both tests. However, the Reading conversion tables differ — Academic Reading generally requires fewer correct answers for the same band score because the texts are more challenging. Listening, Writing, and Speaking are scored the same way.
How many correct answers do I need for band 7 in Listening?
You need 30–31 correct answers out of 40 to achieve band 7 in the IELTS Listening test. This applies to both Academic and General Training tests as the Listening component is the same.
How many correct answers do I need for band 7 in Reading?
For Academic Reading, you need 30–32 correct answers out of 40. For General Training Reading, you need 34–35 correct answers out of 40 to achieve band 7.
Can I get a half band score in IELTS?
Yes. Individual section scores and overall scores are reported in whole and half bands (e.g., 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 6.5). The overall score is the average of your four sections, rounded to the nearest half band.

Is this IELTS band score calculator accurate?
Our calculator uses the official IELTS band score conversion tables and rounding rules published by the British Council and IDP. The Listening and Reading conversions are based on the most recent scoring guidelines.
What does a band 8 or band 9 IELTS score mean?
Band 8 (Very Good) indicates you can operate effectively in all contexts, though some inaccuracy and inappropriateness may occur. Band 9 (Expert) means you demonstrate full operational command of the language with only negligible errors. These scores are typically required for professional immigration, university teaching positions, or competitive graduate programs at top universities.
How long does it take to improve your IELTS band score?
Improvement timeline varies based on your starting level and study intensity. On average, students improve 0.5–1.0 band point every 3–4 months of focused study. With intensive coaching and structured IELTS preparation, some learners improve 1.5–2 bands in 6–8 weeks. Consistent practice with realistic test materials and targeted feedback on Writing and Speaking are key to faster improvement.
