Question Types
Proven Listening Strategies
📋 Before Listening: Preparation (1 minute)
What to do:
- Read all questions quickly
- Predict what you'll hear
- Highlight key words to listen for
- Predict question type (Yes/No, number, word, etc.)
Example:
Question: "What is John's phone number?" → Listen for: NUMBER (digits), probably 11 digits
🎯 During Listening: Active Note-Taking
How to take notes:
- Use abbreviations (NR = no reply, apt = appointment)
- Write keywords only, not full sentences
- Mark keywords that match question words
- Don't worry about spelling during listening
- Keep notes organized by question number
What NOT to do:
❌ Write everything word-for-word (you'll miss the next part)
❌ Stop writing (mark where answer is for later review)
✍️ After Each Section: Transfer Answers (2 minutes)
What to do:
- Fill in answers from your notes
- Check spelling (very important!)
- Make sure grammar fits if completing sentences
- Write clearly on the answer sheet
- Move to next section
Note:
You transfer answers AFTER EACH SECTION during the test, not at the end. This prevents losing time.

Common Listening Mistakes
❌ Missing the answer while panicking about a previous question
✓ Don't worry. Move on immediately. Come back only if you have time.
❌ Not writing notes during listening, only at the end
✓ Notes must be taken DURING listening. Transfer to answer sheet AFTER each section.
❌ Spelling mistakes (e.g., 'recieve' instead of 'receive')
✓ Always check spelling on your final answer sheet. Spelling counts!
❌ Answering with wrong form (e.g., 'listen' instead of 'listens')
✓ Pay attention to grammar. If it's asking for a verb, use the correct form.
❌ Not understanding because of accents
✓ Practice with different accents. Watch YouTube/BBC with different accent speakers.
❌ Missing implied information
✓ Listen for context clues. Sometimes the answer is implied, not stated directly.
