Three Essential Reading Techniques
🔍 Technique 1: Skimming (Understanding Main Idea)
What it is:
Reading quickly to get the overall idea without understanding every word. Used for identifying topics and structure.
How to do it:
- Read the title and introduction
- Read the first sentence of each paragraph
- Read the conclusion
- Ignore details for now
When to use:
Before reading the full passage. Takes ~1-2 minutes per passage.
Helps with:
Matching headings, understanding passage structure, finding where to look for specific information
🎯 Technique 2: Scanning (Finding Specific Information)
What it is:
Looking through text for specific keywords or details. You don't read everything, just search for what you need.
How to do it:
- Identify keywords from the question
- Look for synonyms or paraphrasing
- Move your eyes quickly across the page
- Stop when you find the relevant information
When to use:
For specific questions like True/False/Not Given, short answer, sentence completion.
Helps with:
Answering most questions efficiently. Saves time by not reading irrelevant sections.
📚 Technique 3: Detailed Reading (Understanding Context)
What it is:
Reading carefully to understand meaning, including context and nuance. Used to confirm answers.
How to do it:
- Read the sentence with the keyword
- Read 1-2 sentences before and after
- Understand the complete context
- Check if your answer matches the meaning
When to use:
After you find relevant information. Confirm that your answer is correct before moving on.
Helps with:
Understanding nuance, confirming answers for True/False/Not Given, understanding synonyms and paraphrasing.
How to Tackle Each Question Type
Matching Headings
Skim paragraph topic, match to heading. Don't over-analyze. Common wrong answer is too specific.
True/False/Not Given
Scan for information. TRUE = matches exactly. FALSE = contradicts. NOT GIVEN = no info in passage.
Sentence Completion
Scan for keyword from the beginning of the sentence. Read carefully around that word.
Short Answer
Answer must come from passage. Keep it short (1-3 words usually). Scan for specific information.
Multiple Choice
Scan for keyword. Read detailed context. Eliminate obvious wrong answers first.
Summary Completion
Read summary topic first. Find corresponding section in passage. Look for words/ideas in same order.
Vocabulary for Better Reading
Most reading questions test understanding, not vocabulary. However, a larger vocabulary helps you read faster and understand nuance better.
✓ Focus On
- Academic word list (570+ words)
- Synonyms (used in IELTS paraphrasing)
- Words in context (not in isolation)
- Words that appear in practice tests
- Idioms and phrases
✗ Don't Focus On
- Words you'll never encounter
- Memorizing definitions
- Slang or informal language
- Words from random sources
- Very obscure/rare words
Weekly Practice Schedule
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- ❌ Reading every word: Use skimming and scanning. You don't need to read everything.
- ❌ Not reading surrounding context: Always read 1-2 sentences before and after for meaning.
- ❌ Confusing similar words: Watch for synonyms and paraphrasing. They test this constantly.
- ❌ Running out of time: Practice time management. Passage 1 should take max 15 mins.
- ❌ Not checking answers: If you have time, review your answers for careless mistakes.
- ❌ Being too confident: For True/False/Not Given, distinguish carefully between False and Not Given.
