The IELTS Listening test is the same for both Academic and General Training. Many test-takers lose easy marks because they don't know what to listen for. This guide fixes that.
Test Format & Structure
The test has 4 sections with 10 questions each. Each recording is played once only.

The total test time is 40 minutes: 30 minutes for listening + 10 minutes to transfer answers to the answer sheet.
You only hear each recording ONCE. If you miss an answer, move on immediately. Don't lose 10 marks because you're stuck on question 3.
6 Question Types Explained
Multiple Choice
Choose the correct answer from options A, B, or C (sometimes A-E). These test your ability to listen for specific details and main ideas.
Strategy: Read the questions before the recording starts. Underline keywords. Eliminate wrong options as you listen.
Form / Note / Table Completion
Fill in gaps in a form, set of notes, or table. Tests your ability to follow specific information in a structured format.
Strategy: Check the word limit (e.g., "NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS"). Answers usually appear in order. Predict what type of word fits (noun, verb, number) before listening.
Sentence Completion
Complete sentences by writing the missing words directly from the recording.
Strategy: Read the incomplete sentence first. Think about what grammatical form is needed. Listen for exact words — paraphrasing is rare in this question type.
Short-Answer Questions
Answer questions in a few words based on what you hear.
Strategy: Pay attention to question words (who, what, where, when, why, how). Your answer should be directly from the recording.
Plan / Map / Diagram Labeling
Label a map, floor plan, or diagram based on spoken directions or descriptions.
Strategy: Study the map or diagram before listening. Listen for direction words: north, south, behind, opposite, next to, on the corner. Follow the speaker's movement.
Matching
Match items from two lists based on what you hear.
Strategy: The options may be used more than once. Keep mental track of which ones you've used. Listen for synonyms — the recording may not use the exact words in the list.
Proven Strategies for a High Score
Preview Questions: Use the 30-60 seconds before each section to read ahead. Underline one keyword per question so you know what to listen for.
Listen for Signposts: Transition words signal the next answer. Words like "firstly", "however", "the main reason is", "another factor" all tell you something important is coming.
Write While Listening: Write answers directly on the question paper. You get 10 minutes at the end to transfer everything to the answer sheet.
During the 10-minute transfer time, check spelling, word limits, and plurals. A missing 's' can cost you a full band score point.
Check Spelling: Proper nouns (names, places) are usually spelled in the recording. Listen carefully. Other words must be spelled correctly or they're marked wrong.
Don't Get Stuck: If you miss one answer, leave it and keep listening. Each question is worth exactly 1 mark. Fixating on one question means you'll miss the next 2-3 as well.
Watch for Plurals: A missing 's' changes your answer. Listen for clues like "there are several" or "the main reasons include" to know when a plural is needed.

Out of 40 raw marks, here is the approximate conversion to band scores (may vary slightly per test):

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Writing more words than allowed: Always check the word limit printed in the instructions. "NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS" means exactly that — three words means zero marks.
Losing focus in Sections 3 and 4: These sections are longer and more complex. Practice specifically with academic lectures and group discussions to build focus stamina.
Ignoring the context: Read the instructions carefully. A form completion question requires different listening than a map labeling question. Know what to expect.
Not transferring answers correctly: You have 10 minutes. Use them. Double-check spelling, word limits, and that you've matched each answer to the correct question number.
