Proven Listening Strategies

Before Listening: Preparation

Read all questions quickly. Predict what you'll hear. Highlight keywords. Predict answer types (number, word, Yes/No).

Example: Q: "What is John's phone number?" → Listen for a number, probably 11 digits.

During Listening: Active Note-Taking

Use abbreviations. Write keywords only. Mark answers by question number. Don't write full sentences.

Don't: Write everything word-for-word. Stop writing completely. Both cause you to miss the next answer.

After Each Section: Transfer Answers

Fill in answers from your notes. Check spelling carefully. Make sure grammar fits. Write clearly.

Master Native Accents

IELTS uses accents from English-speaking countries. Practice with all of them:

  • British English — Clear, formal. Sections 1-3 commonly.
  • Australian English — Distinctive vowel sounds. Sections 2-4 commonly. Listen for 'ay' and 'oi' sounds.
  • Canadian English — Similar to US with distinct 'ou' sounds. Sections 3-4 occasionally.
  • New Zealand English — Similar to Australian, more British influence. Sections 2-3 occasionally.

Common Listening Mistakes

  • Missing an answer and panicking — Move on immediately. Don't lose more marks.
  • Not taking notes during listening — Notes must be taken during, not after.
  • Spelling mistakes — Check spelling on final answer sheet. It counts.
  • Wrong grammatical form — Pay attention to singular/plural and verb forms.
  • Struggling with accents — Practice with diverse accent content on YouTube and BBC.
  • Missing implied information — Listen for context clues, not just direct statements.
